About Space is a leading lighting company in Australia that take their lighting seriously. I spoke to Casey–Scott Corless, Design & Creative Co-ordinator at About Space and asked these three questions to learn more about lighting in relation to the environment and where we heading.
Why is LED the best choice for those seeking to have green interior spaces?
The sustainability of LED is multidimensional: technological advances mean an outstanding light output is achievable on a unparalleled low energy consumption. This has significant impact in reducing greenhouse emissions and alleviating the pressure that is placed on our natural resources in powering the grid. Lower running temperatures mean that recessed luminaires, such as LED downlights, can be utilised without penetrating insulation envelopes, enhancing green star ratings. And finally, the extraordinary cradle-to-grave lifespan of LED (in some instances, up 100,000 hours of use) is unrivaled; significantly reducing the waste associated with traditional lamps and lessening consumption of our vital primary resources at manufacture!
Are LEDS lights healthier for people than traditional lighting?
LEDs emit comparatively little UV radiation when measured against other lamp types - CFL and Metal Halide are demonstrated to emit harmful levels in sustained exposure. They also don’t contain the same nasties, such as mercury or heavy metals, that discharge lamps do. While levels in traditional lamp types might be reasonably low-impact for the end-user, avoiding the use of these substances allows us to revolutionise factory conditions within the supply chain; reducing the dangerous substances present to workers in manufacturing contexts, and providing a mindfully ethical option for the consumer.
What is next for the lighting industry in terms of even more efficient lighting?
LED technology is growing more rapidly than our industry can take it to market – year-on-year, we’re able to design and manufacture higher output products that consume less energy, and engineer higher quality technology to assure the lifespan of our products. This goes a long way in propelling us towards our vision for a sustainable society with low greenhouse emissions, smaller carbon footprints, and less creation of waste.
